Assembling Campdraft Leathers
| STEP ONE: Pass the buckle end of the campdraft leather under the bar of
the safety stirrup, so the nylon backing is against the stirrup, and
the buckle is on the side of the stirrup that is the leading edge. On
the safety stirrup, it is the high side of the platform. This will put
the buckle on the leading edge of the campdraft leather, facing up the
trail, when you are riding. It will not be against your shin! |
 |
| STEP TWO: Thread the pointed end of the campdraft leather up through
the large leather loop that is sewn to the buckle end of the campdraft
leather. This loop has the ASSC logo stamped on the outside. Pull it
through until the wide part of the campdraft leather is within six
inches or so from the buckle. |
 |
| STEP THREE. Now take the pointed end of the campdraft leather and
thread it BACK through the top slot of the brass buckle, so now this
pointed end is between the wide part of the campdraft leather, and the
narrow part. Now poke the stainless steel tongue of the buckle through
a hole in the campdraft leather, so once assembled, the campdraft
leather will be at the desired length for the leg it is going to
accommodate. |
 |
| STEP FOUR: Now take the pointed end of the campdraft leather and
reverse its direction, and thread it down through the large leather
loop, with the pointed end heading toward the leading edge of the
stirrup. This will be the side of the stirrup that is facing up the
trail when the rider's leg is in the campdraft leather. |
 |
| STEP FIVE. Now reach down between the wide pieces of the campdraft
leather, that is wrapped around the shank of the stirrup, and take the
pointed end of the leather and thread it through the slot in the iron,
and turn this pointed end back up through the large leather loop. Now
pull the whole leather down, so the loop tightens around the shank of
the stirrup. . By passing the unused pointed end of the leather through
the slot, and then pulling it all tight, the stirrup is prevented from
rolling around the shank . Now slide the assembled stirrup and
campdraft leather over the stirrup suspension bar of the saddle.
putting the narrow part of the campdraft leather againt the horse. Make
sure the leather is placed deep over the bar. Tap the leather all the
way in with a hammer, if necessary. Now when the foot goes in the
stirrup, and the rider is seatd in the saddle, the buckle of the
campdraft leather is low down against the top of the stirrup, and the
buckle is facing up the trail -- not facing the leg of the rider. To
adjust to make the fender short or longer, simply loosen the bottom ,
seek another hole, then re-tighten the bottom assembly. The beauty of
the traditional Aussie campdraft leather is that, unlike an English
leather, it does not pinch the leg, becaue the inside strap is more
narrow than the outside stap. |
