How to Make a Wither Tracing

A wither tracing is the most important information that you need to send us to custom fit an Australian Saddle to your horse. But it isn't the only thing we need! Please read our Saddle Fitment page entirely to learn what you need to send us for an optimal fit.

 Where to trace withers

First, note where an Australian saddle will sit on your horse. It is forward, on the withers, with the leading edge of the girth positioned one to three inches behind the horse's front legs. Measure the withers at the front edge of where the saddle will sit when it is properly positioned. If you don't have a comparable Australian saddle yet, you can determine where the front edge of the saddle will be by measuring the withers directly above the back edge of the horse's front leg, as shown by the red line above.

Next, snip off the twisted ends of a common coat hanger (or use any other bendable wire), and bend the wire over the horse's withers at the measure point. Keep bending the wire until it fits snugly, and, when removed, accurately represents the shape and angle of your horse's withers. Once you are satisfied that the wire matches your horse's shape, remove the wire while taking care not to change the shape or the angle of the wire.

Finally, trace the outline of the wire on a standard 8.5" by 11" sheet of paper with a black marker or a bold pen. Turn the paper sideways to enable a larger drawing of the withers. We only need 6 to 8 inches down each side of the wire to get the correct angle and shape for the contact points of the saddle. Use a ruler and mark a scale in inches across the bottom of the wither tracing. We need this as some scanners and fax machines alter the scale of the tracing. Also write your name, phone number, and email address on the wither tracing.

If you wish, you can trace the withers at additional points and the shape of your horse's backline, as described in the video below. All information you can provide is helpful!

To send by fax: Fax your wither tracing to (720) 975-9295.

To send by email: DO NOT SEND A PHOTO of your wither tracing. Instead, send us a scan (many free apps can make a scan). You can email it to: info@downunderweb.com

To send by mail: Mail your wither tracing to The Australian Stock Saddle Company, 2250 Airport Blvd, Suite 301, Aurora, CO 80011
